Mumbai Refinery:
Mumbai Refinery With an installed capacity of 7.5 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA), HPCL's Mumbai Refinery is one of the most complex refineries in the country. Commissioned by the erstwhile Esso in the year 1954, this versatile refinery is the first among the modern refineries in India. The Mumbai Refinery complex is spread over an area of 321 acres and includes the fuel refinery as well as the lube refinery.
This refinery was initially started as a fuel refinery with a crude processing capacity of 1.25 MMTPA. The expansion of the Mumbai refinery over the past few years has increased its capacity to 7.5 MMTPA.
In the year 1974, the Government of India took over the operations of Esso in India and made HPCL a public sector enterprise. The Mumbai refinery was upgraded to produce BS VI friendly transport fuel.
Visakh Refinery:
Visakh Refinery Visakhapatnam Refinery was commissioned in the year 1956 as Caltex Oil Refining India Limited. It was the first oil refinery on the eastern seaboard of India and the first major industry in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. CORIL was taken over by the Government of India and was merged with Hindustan Petroleum in the year 1978.
Starting with a low installed capacity of 0.65 MMTPA, the refinery was expanded to 8.3 MMTPA in multiple stages. The Visakh refinery is a fuel-based refinery that makes mass consumption major products such as petrol, diesel and kerosene. The refinery has the flexibility to process a wide range of crude oil purchased worldwide and from non-bitumen to bitumen and lubricated crude oil.
The refinery has a dedicated captive power plant to meet its energy requirements and has followed the policy of making energy conservation a top priority in all its activities. The Visakh refinery was upgraded to produce BS IV friendly transport fuel.
